Are there certain questions an employer may not ask during a job interview?

An employer is legally prevented from asking several types of questions during an interview. Questions concerning medical information, such as disabilities or previous sick leave and worker’s compensation, are not acceptable before a job offer is made. Inquiries concerning race, age, ethnicity, religion, and family plans are also illegal. Employers are allowed to ask if an applicant has been convicted of a crime. However, employers cannot inquire if a job seeker has ever been arrested. Furthermore, companies cannot question an applicant’s previous union involvement.
