Workplace Bullying and Hazing

College students sometimes face bullying and hazing when they enter college and more often when they join a sorority or fraternity. Hazing has been denounced by all colleges, but some students and organizations are nonetheless able to carry it out in secret, without outsiders finding out.

Contrary to popular belief, hazing and bullying are not limited only to college. They can and sometimes do occur in the work place as well. They tend to happen in occupations such as law enforcement and fire fighting. In such occupations, there is often a culture of toughness that prevails. Firefighters and police officers feel as though they have to be tough, and sometimes decide to haze new employees as some sort of initiation ritual.

In some cases, older police officers may want to test whether or not new recruits are tough enough. As a result, they may bother or bully them. They may also make new recruits perform tasks to prove their worth or merely because they also had to endure hazing when they were new to the job.

Hazing and bullying are harassment. Harassment is illegal in the work place, and employers and supervisors have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that it does not occur. Sometimes, however, when employees complain to supervisor about harassment by colleagues, supervisors and employers do not take any action, and harassed employees are left essentially helpless.
