Night Work and Shift Work
Aside from working normal business hours, from around 9 am to 5 pm, many workers have to work nights of shifts. Night work involves during the time usually meant for sleeping, for example from 12 am to 8 am. Shift work involves working hours that do completely overlap with normal business hours. Shift work includes night work as well as work from 2 pm to 10 pm, for example, or from 6 am to 2 pm.
Night workers and shift workers are at increased risk of a number of problems because of their odd hours. They are likely to become increasingly tired and more prone to mistakes. Also, pre-existing conditions can be worsened and new problems can arise, such as digestive malfunction. The cause of such problems arises because the body does not perform optimally at night or in the early morning hours and because night work and shift work separates workers from normal social activity, as most people work 9 am to 5 pm.
There are a number of ways to decrease the problems associated with night work and shift work. Relaxation exercises, better exercise and eating habits, and improved sleep techniques may help. Also, employers can provide better information to employees about the stresses involved with night and shift work and can also create programs to help their employees.
Sometimes, however, night work and shift work can inevitably lead to too many problems. If working an unusual shift has caused you health problems, speak with an attorney.
