Background Checks
Employers want to ensure that they have the best employees. They want the smartest, most reliable, safest employees. Some of the ways that employers attempt to determine this information is through interviews. Another way that employers attempt to find out information about a potential employee is by running a background check on that person.
Background checks are run for a number of reasons. Some of those reasons are as follows:
- Jobs may require security clearance. For example, many government jobs require access to sensitive information. As a result, human resources employees in government offices do not want to hire people with criminal activity in their background check because a person who has committed a crime before may be unable to handle sensitive information. The same logic applies to private organizations as well.
- Employers want to make sure that a candidate for a position is telling the truth. Running a credit check helps employers verify a person’s job history, criminal history, and other things as well.
- Some jobs have duties that cannot be performed with people who have had certain problems in the past. For example, someone who has been charged with molesting a child will not be given a job at a day care center. Or, someone who has excessive driving tickets will likely not be given a pizza delivery job. So, background checks help employers determine whether candidates are eligible for certain positions.
Background checks can be very thorough. As the examples above indicate, they can include an individual’s criminal record, job history, and motor vehicle record, and they can also include an individual’s credit report and as well as other things.
Important to keep in mind is that an employer cannot force someone to have a background check done on him or her.
